Do I Need a New Fuseboard for an EV Charger Installation? — Leamington Spa

One of the most common questions we get asked when it comes to EV charger installation is whether a new fuseboard is required. The short answer is: it depends on the current state of your consumer unit and whether it has the capacity and protection required for a dedicated EV charging circuit.

What Does an EV Charger Need from Your Fuseboard?

A home EV charger (typically 7kW) requires a dedicated circuit from your consumer unit. This means a spare way in your fuseboard with the correct MCB rating (usually 32A or 40A depending on the charger). The circuit also needs to be RCD protected, which is a requirement under the 18th Edition wiring regulations for all new circuits.

When Will You Need a New Consumer Unit?

You are likely to need a new consumer unit if any of the following apply:

  • Your current fuseboard has no spare ways for a new circuit
  • Your fuseboard is old and uses rewirable fuses rather than MCBs
  • Your fuseboard does not have adequate RCD protection
  • Your fuseboard is in poor condition or has been flagged on a previous EICR
  • The incoming supply cable is undersized for the additional load

When Won't You Need a New Consumer Unit?

If your consumer unit is modern, has spare ways, and already has adequate RCD protection across all circuits, then a new fuseboard is unlikely to be required. We will always carry out a thorough assessment of your existing installation before confirming whether an upgrade is needed.

What Happens During the Assessment?

Before any EV charger installation, we carry out a free survey of your property. During this survey we will inspect your consumer unit, assess the available capacity, check the incoming supply, and confirm the best cable route for the new circuit. We will then provide you with a full written quote that clearly sets out whether a consumer unit upgrade is required and the cost of the full installation.
